Arbuckle Mountain Area Chapter
Predator Considerations

Fire Ants New Page 12-1-07
In the spring of 2008. AMAQU will undertake a longer term effort to determine what baiting and bilogical controls if any can be effective in keeping the population of fire ants in check.  Research is showing that the fire ants may kill some chicks and at minimum compete for available food sources of seed and insects.  Our findings are that increased habitat management by disturbance can actually increase the density of fire ants.  Several baits have locally been found effective and tested in the Lake Murray State Park, although expensive to apply.  Biological control by the introduction of phorid flies, the fire ant's natural predator has been initiated in southern Oklahoma in the Durant area in cooperation with OSU Extension and the USDA, and the project sheds hope for over-wintering populations which we intend to trans locate to the Arbuckle Mountain Area when proper approvals have been obtained.

Wayne Smith with the OSU Extension in Durant, is leading the fire ant charge in Oklahoma.
